AI Against COVID-19

COVID-19 infection is suspected when a person with or without exposure to the virus presents with upper respiratory and/or systemic symptoms like runny nose, cough, fever, headache, and body malaise. This disease, however, has an incubation period where a person, prior to manifesting these symptoms can already have chest x-ray findings of pneumonia and pass on the virus to others.

Screening for the viral illness through chest x-ray is standard of care in the New Normal. By developing an Artificial intelligence tool that can accurately read chest x-rays, diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia can be done earlier and faster and help in flattening the curve of this public health menace.

The study aims to determine the accuracy of diagnosing COVID-19 pneumonia using AI-Powered reading of the chest x-ray of all patients admitted at a tertiary hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Screening of COVID-19 suspects using chest x-rays has increased workload of the already overwhelmed radiology departments of hospitals. An AI-powered chest x-ray reading software will shorten waiting time for clinical decisions. This is because it will speed up the decision on whether to use up valuable RT-PCR kits as a next step; or to remove these people from the suspect list and allow them to go back to work; or be admitted into the CLEAN parts of the hospital for other health concerns. Patients and their companions will also be served better and feel safer.

How You Can Help

We are partnering with Philippine Hospitals, Doctors, and COVID-19 warriors to be able to acquire more chest x-ray data to increase the detection accuracy of the AI models. Furthermore, the trained AI models will be deployed in an application which can be used by any clinician to quantitatively assist them in rapid screening of patients potentially infected by COVID-19. All patient data are anonymized.
